There are about 31,500 children under the age of 19 with diabetes in the UK, about 95% of these have type 1 diabetes.
It is important that all professionals working in schools, and other settings where they come into contact with children and young people, are aware of what type 1 diabetes is and how to support those affected.
Virtual College has worked with JDRF* to create a free course to give professionals a basic understanding of type 1 diabetes. Using a school as the setting, the free course follows a number of students with the autoimmune condition through their daily lives.
After completing this course learners will be able to:
Know how to manage type 1 diabetes
Understand the implications for not managing it properly
Spot the signs of low and high blood glucose
Support children with type 1 diabetes
“This is a wonderful teaching aid for school staff and feel confident that we can ensure a high % of staff caring for children with T1D complete this course within schools.”
