Reg Pengelly

Reg Pengelly Ex-detective superintendent lead for child protection and violent crime, Reg Pengelly is an Assistant Director of NHS Dorset and is their lead for Safeguarding Children and for Domestic Violence. He has substantial experience of public protection issues and until 2003 was the portfolio lead for violent crime at her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary. In this role he represented the police service at the Victoria Climbie Inquiry and led a number of high profile national inspections of safeguarding including the first Joint Chief Inspectors Inspection of Safeguarding for England.

 

Towards the end of a thirty four year career as a detective officer in the police service, Reg Pengelly was appointed as the Detective Superintendent lead for child protection and violent crime at Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) at the Home Office in London. In this role he assisted in the development of the Every Child Matters Green Paper and was the point of liaison between HMIC and the Victoria Climbie Inquiry. Mr Pengelly led the police inspection into the investigation of rape in the Metropolitan Police, the first national Joint Chief Inspector's Safeguarding Inspection, a national inspection of Domestic Violence Investigation & Prosecution and the post Climbie Inquiry Inspections of 6 London Boroughs.

 

On retirement from the police service, Mr Pengelly worked for the National Centre for Policing Excellence where he co-wrote national police guidance on investigating Domestic Violence, the Investigation of Child Abuse and the Investigation of Harassment. Mr Pengelly holds a number of management qualifications including a MBA from Henley Management College and now works as the Head of Children's Services at Dorset Primary Care Trust.
