On Friday 8th April 2016 Virtual College’s Safeguarding Division hosted the Spring Advisory Panel Meeting (APM) at the Craiglands Hotel in Ilkley

Each quarter we hold an Advisory Panel for skilled professionals specialising in safeguarding to discuss current issues and topics which are currently relevant in child protection.

The theme of this Safeguarding Advisory Panel was how child sexual exploitation can affect the brain and featured a presentation from Catherine Knibbs. Catherine Knibbs is the founder and CEO of Peer Support Yorkshire CIC and specialises as a trauma and abuse therapist for children and young people.

Catherine’s presentation began with an overview of child development and moved on to describe what the brain consists of and how it functions as well as how the brain is affected by trauma. The presentation utilised ethical examples of trauma and abuse to discuss neuroscience, child development, child psychology and adult psychology.
